WINTERVILLE -- Funeral services for Helen Waddle[sic] Wilkerson Skelton, 61, of Winterville will be at 4 p.m. Monday at Benoit Union Church, Benoit. She died Sept. 11, 2004, at Delta Regional Medical Center, Greenville. Burial will be at the Greenville Cemetery, Greenville, under the direction of Boone-Wells Funeral Home, Greenville.
Mrs. Skelton, born and reared in Winterville, was a graduate of Greenville High School. She held a Bachelor of Science degree from Mississippi University for Women and a Master of Arts degree from Mississippi State University, where she was chosen sweetheart of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. She served as treasurer of the Mississippi University for Women Alumnae Association, secretary of the Washington County MUW Alumnae Association, and represented the "W" on the Washington County Inter Alumni Council.
Mrs. Skelton was employed as a high school and an elementary librarian with the Greenville Public Schools and Washington School. She taught English at Mississippi State University and was appointed to the first board of directors, where she served for 11 years. Additionally, she served as chairman of the Harvest Fun Festival, fund-raiser for the school.
An avid gardener, Mrs. Skelton was a member and president of the Little Greenville Garden Club and the Junior Greenville Garden Club. She also served as treasurer and finance chairman of the Greenville Garden Club and was appointed to the Seed Task Force of the Garden Club of America in 1999 to study the potential benefits and disadvantages of genetically modified seeds. She was vice president of the Council of Greenville Garden Clubs, horticulture chairman for the Garden Clubs of Mississippi, Inc., an accredited life judge with the National Council of Garden Clubs, Inc. Mrs. Skelton judged flowers throughout the state and bordering state.
A member of Benoit Presbyterian Church, Mrs. Skelton taught both youth and adult Sunday School classes, served as secretary and president of the Benoit Union Church Administrative Council, and as the superintendent of the Benoit Union Church Sunday School. She worked as grounds chairman of the church for many years.
Active in local and civic affairs, Mrs. Skelton was treasurer and vice president of Riverside Cotton Wives. She co-authored a local news column, "Missy Cotton," and wrote style shows for the Cotton Wives. Additionally, she published several general interest articles in The Delta Review.
While she served as president of the Greenville Junior Auxiliary, the organization underwrote the publication of "History of Washington County," written by Bern and Franke Keating. She was a life member of the National Association of Junior Auxliaries, and she served on the board of directors of the Delta Council.
She served as vice chairman and as the five-star chairman of the Washington County Republican Executive Committee, attended the 2000 Republican National Convention in Philadelphia, Pa., and the inauguration of President George W. Bush, and was active in the Washington County Republican Women.
She is survived by her husband, Emery D. Skelton of Winterville; three sons, Jefferson Pinckney Wilkerson Skelton of Madison, Emery David Mitchell Skelton of Winterville and Judson Harrold McClellan Skelton of Starkville; five grandsons and two granddaughters; her mother, Mrs. Jeff Wilkerson; and a sister, Princella Nowell of Winterville.
The family will receive friends today from 5 to 7 p.m. at Boone-Wells Funeral Home, and on Monday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the family home in Winterville. STARKVILLE, Miss.--A Mississippi State alumna and Delta native is being remembered by her family with an endowed scholarship.
The Helen W. Skelton Endowed Scholarship for full-time English majors recently was established in the university' s College of Arts and Sciences through an endowed gift from Skelton's husband Emery, the couple's three sons and their wives.
Like his wife, Emery Skelton is an MSU graduate. The Skelton siblings include Jeff and Sarah of Madison; David and Theresa of Winterville; and Jud and Shannon of Starkville.
Helen Skelton was a veteran Washington County high school and elementary librarian who died in September 2004 at age 61. A leading educational supporter and active member of the Greenville community, she was employed with the Greenville Public Schools and, later, the private Washington School, also in Greenville, where she was on its founding board of trustees.
Skelton was a graduate of Greenville High School and Mississippi University for Women. She began pursuing a master's at Mississippi State and taught English at the Starkville university in the 1960s, though circumstances kept her from completing her advanced degree there until some 20 years later.
In addition to being an avid gardener, Skelton held a number of local, regional and national leadership positions during her lifetime. The offices included treasurer and finance chairman of the Greenville Garden Club, president of the Greenville Junior Auxiliary, member of the Delta Council board of trustees, and treasurer of the MUW Alumni Association.
She also was vice chairperson of the Washington County Republican Executive Committee and an active member of the Washington County Republican Women.
Trish Hughes, director of development for the College of Arts and Sciences said, "The Skelton family regards this endowment as a fitting tribute for someone who was such a strong advocate for education throughout her lifetime."
Freshman Matthew G. Clark of Purvis is the first Helen Wilkerson Skelton Scholar in English at MSU. The son of Robert and Jacqueline Clark, he is receiving $1,000 for the 2005-06 school year.
MSU's arts and sciences college enrolls more than 3,500 undergraduate and graduate students. English is among the academic unit's 16 departments.

She also was vice chairperson of the Washington County Republican Executive Committee and an active member of the Washington County Republican Women.
