wife of John Cawley McArthur and daughter of Sarah Jameson (Belcher) Edward Loftus Hope Barry. She was widowed when her eldest was seventeen and her youngest was not yet five years old. She never recovered. Only three of her sons reached adulthood. John Alexander MacArthur the eldest, the middle son of these, Cawley, died and was buried in Liverpool and Renfrew Douglas MacArthur. She had her likeness in full mourning carved on Cawley's tombstone. During the summer she often used to visit her widowed sister, Sarah Badley, in Illinois. She was intered first at Oakwood Cemetery, Upper Alton, Madison County, Illinois and in 1912 her remains were moved to be beside those of her husband at Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York.
