The following is from the Miller, SD "Press" issue of Thursday, October 23, 1980:
"Rites held for Bertha Fitch
Mrs. Bertha Woodruff Fitch, 84, died Thursday at Prairie Good Samaritan Center, Miller.
Funeral services were Monday at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Miller, with the Rev. James Smucker officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Wessington.
Bertha McFarling was born August 27, 1896, in Ottumwa, Iowa, to John and Mary McFarling. She moved with her parents to South Dakota and married Norman Woodruff December 10, 1913, in Miller. She lived on a farm in Bates Township, Hand County, for 58 years and for the past nine years has been a resident of Miller. Her husband died in November 1959. She then married Frank D. Fitch February 9, 1976, in Miller and he died in August 1978.
She was a member of Rose Hill Presbyterian Church, Order of Eastern Star Chapter 119, United Presbyterian Women, Rose Hill Pioneer Club and the Senior Citizen Centers of Miller and Wessington.
Survivors include three sons, Jay [sic]Woodruff, Winchester, IN [sic]: Jean [sic] Woodruff, Genessee, ID; Victor Woodruff, Wessington; two daughters, Mrs. Claire (Betty) Patridge, Stockton, CA and Mrs. Frank (Arlene) Smith, Thousand Oaks, CA; two step-daughters, Mrs. Lola Orth, Fort Pierre; Mrs. Art (Dorothy) Paleck, Rapid City; 17 grandchildren; three brothers, Bert McFarling, Anaheim, CA; Floyd McFarling, Kelso, WA; Richard McFarling, Longview, WA; five sisters, Mrs. Jack (Ferne) Clifton, Marion; Mrs. Truman (Mary) Cooley, Centralia, MO; :Mrs. Ila Meyers, Buena Park, CA; Mrs. Nelwyn (Eva) Moran, Norfolk, NE; Mrs. Bland (Dolly) Wright, Mexico, MO.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, one son, Norman, Jr. Woodruff, one daughter, Gladys Bell, and one grandson."
