"Funeral services were held Wednesday, Nov. 25th, at the Rose Hill church for Norman A. The following are excerpts written by the deceased to his children of February 25, 1957, while their mother was in Ohio:
'Dear Kids: You know, when a person looks back instead of ahead it's a sign of old age. I can't figure any one year in the past 70 that I'd like to have missed, but I'd like to see what it will be in the next 70. Here is a litle of my history:
Born February 23, 1887 in Dakota Territory. When I was 5 years old the folks took me to Missouri in a covered wagon, stayed one year and came back the same way. When I was eight we moved to Illinois. When I was 15 we went to Wisconsin. Every winter from when I was 17 until the year 1909 I worked in sawmills and 1909 I came out to South Dakota. On December 10, 1913, Mother (Bertha B. McFarling) and i were married. From here on out you know the rest. Best wishes for everybody. As ever, Dad'
In march of 1914 Norman and Bertha moved to the farm in Bates Township upon which they lived at the time of his death.
He served on the Triple A Committee for approximately 20 years, was Township Clerk for several years, a member of the Rose Hill Presbyterian Church and a Member of the Wessington Masonic Lodge No. 107 since June 14, 1917.
He is survived by his wife and seven children, all of whom were present for the funeral services: Joy, Winchester, Idaho; Gene, Genesee, Idaho; Gladys (Mrs. Joe Bell) Phoenix, Ariz; Betty (Mrs. Claire Patridge), San Mateo, Calif; Norman, Jr., Miller; Arlene (Mrs. Frank Smith), Springfield, Va; and Victor, Wessington; one brother, Col. Victor R. Woodruff, Pebble Beach, Calif; 16 grandchildren; and a host of friends".
