Donna Lea Shimpfky
Birth: Apr. 11, 1943
Las Animas County
Colorado, USA
Death: Dec. 13, 1957
Broomfield County
Colorado, USA

Donna Lea Shimpfky, 14, daughter of H. Lester Shimpfky, junior high school principal at Broomfield School, and Mrs. Shimpfky, died at Rose Memorial hospital in Denver December 13th. Funeral services were held at the Broomfield Methodist church Tuesday at 2pm in charge of Olinger Mortuary. Interment was in Crown Hill.
Undoubtedly the largest crowd to assemble for any purpose filled the Methodist Church in respect to Donna Lea and her family. The Rev. Reuben Staniforth was minister for the funeral service.
Besides the parents, Donna Lea is survived by an older brother, Dick, 16, and by Harry Joe, 10 and Laurel 6; by the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. H.A. Shimpfky of Wheat Ridge and Mrs. Maude Brazelton of Denver.
The father and grandparents are widely known in Boulder County, the former being a graduate of Boulder schools and the University. The grandfather is a retired Boulder mail carrier and was active in Masonic organizations before leaving this city to make his home in Wheat Ridge.
Sadness and sorrow draw us together and make us as one. Loss of a loved one is almost more than can be borne, but strength and courage are sent to us when we need them. A number of years ago these few lines helped to regain perspective when all else had failed. We repeat them now for Mr. and Mrs. H.L. Shimpfky and family in the hope that compassion and sympathy of friends may help.

"I walked a mile with laughter and she chattered all the way-
Yet ne'er a thing did I learn from laughter as we walked along that day.
I walked a mile with sorrow, and ne'er a word said she-
But oh! The things I learned from sorrow as she walked along with me."

printed in the Broomfield Star-Builder December 19,1957

Donna Lea Shimpfky is my sister. She was a blooming flower nipped in the bud of life. Just 14 years old. Donna was terrified of the up coming surgery that was planned for her. She did not want to go so my Dad promised her he would have a telephone put in her bedroom when she came home. She died during the tonsilectomy. A part of each of us died that day.
It was a cold December day, Friday the 13th, when she died right before Christmas. Christmas was never the same for our family again. We mourned her so deeply and for so long.

Donna Lea was a pretty girl with very blond hair and eyes of brown. She was slender build and about 5' 1" tall. Donna was starting eight grade when our family moved to Broomfield. School was being held in a row of new houses on 1st ave. She made friends easily because in this new school, in this new town, everyone was a new kid. Daddy was Principal of the Jr. High and together they helped pick the name of the mascot, the school song and the schools colors. Donna was a cheerleader the year and half she was at BJH. She was also a majorette in the newly formed marching band directed by Daddy. She had many friends, and the turn out at the funeral was a testimony to that. I think the entire community was present.
There couldn't have been anything sadder to happen to a family.
