In memory of the dozens, nee hundreds of unknowns in this ancient cemetery.

Recently I received this message from a fellow findagrave contributor - "Unknowns are acceptable with a photo, however unknown unknown serves no purpose without dates or location".

As my hand has been virtually slapped, I'm offering a photo of the graveyard as my tribute to these unknown souls. I respectfully disagree with the contributor. While my memorial indeed serves no purpose to the genealogist searching for his/her lost relative's date of birth or death, it may help them understand why they can find no stone for that relative even though they may know the cemetery in which the person was buried.

This ancient cemetery has been responsible for the State of North Carolina moving the plans for a highway bypass. It is important, the lost graves are important.

But most of all, this memorial gives me, and you a place to pay our respects to the unidentified souls buried at Hopewell Baptist Church in Cleveland County, North Carolina, most of whom will never, ever have people searching for them, and most of whom will never, ever have their names on a findagrave memorial. This is their only memorial.

May their rest continue to be peaceful.
