Obituary for Joanne Katherine Barczewski Lewis

Joanne Katherine Barczewski Lewis, 74, of New London, PA, died Saturday, May 3, 2008, at the Jennersville Regional Hospital, West Grove, following an extended illness.

She was the wife of the late Chester Robert Lewis, with whom she had shared 43 years of marriage. Her husband died on February 3, 2007.

She was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, and grandmother. Born on July 21, 1933 in Wilmington, DE, she was the daughter of the late Steven J. and Anne Martha Napolski Barczewski. She was raised on the La Grange dairy farm in Glasgow, DE.

Joanne attended St. Hedwig Elementary School in Wilmington, DE, and was a 1951 graduate of Newark High School, Newark, DE. She was a 1955 graduate of the former Colorado State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, now Colorado State University (CSU), where she earned a B.S. degree in Bacteriology. She attended the University of California, and in 1958 received her M.S. degree in Agronomy from the University of Delaware. At that time, she was the second woman to receive this Master's degree from the college.

In 2006, she created the "Joanne B. and Chester R. Lewis Scholarship" at CSU in the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences for Professional Veterinary Medicine (PVM) students who are in good academic standing and who are enrolled in their first, second, or third year of the PVM program.

From 1959 to 1963, she was employed as a chemist's assistant in Virginia cellulose in the research center at Hercules Inc., Wilmington, DE. For the past 21 years, Joanne was employed as the New London Township tax collector.

Joanne and her late husband owned and operated S. G. Lewis & Son, a Massey-Harris, Ferguson, Massey-Ferguson and New Holland farm equipment dealership and Red Rose animal feed business, in Jennersville, PA. In 1979 the business was sold to Merritt Cordage Corporation of NJ.

Since 1963, she had resided on her Black Angus cattle, hay, and grain farm known as "Ten More Acres" in New London Township.

She was a member of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, West Grove; Chester County Farmers Association; Rough and Tumble (R&T) Engineers Historical Association in Kinzers, PA; the Home and Farm Antique Association of Chester County; the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA); the Needlework Guild Association; Brandywine Fiber Arts Guild; Elk Creek Spinners and Weavers; and the Penn Area Branch Auxiliary of the Jennersville Regional Hospital.

In her leisure time, she enjoyed knitting, spinning, sewing, embroidery, quilting, playing the piano, horses, sheep, golf, photography, reading, listening to polka music, participating in AACA Glidden Tours, and the annual R&T Threshermen's Reunion. She enjoyed authentically restoring and showing antique cars such as a 1915 Model T Ford. Mrs. Lewis was included in the Smithsonian Museum's 25th Anniversary issue magazine in an article titled "If you can't bear to part with it, open a new museum." Joanne and her late husband, Chester, traveled extensively throughout the United States and overseas.

She is survived by a daughter, L. Susan Lewis Arday (CAPT David R. Arday, M.D.) of Laurel, MD; a son, Chester Stokes "Chip" Lewis (Debra) of Ballston Spa, NY; two grandsons, Cadet Corporal Daniel J.
