Jim received a direct commission and was a Captain before being riffed during the draw-down of Viet Nam. He was riffed to a Master Sergeant and was at the 77th Ordnance Detachment (EOD), Navajo Army Depot, Flagstaff AZ 1971-73. He later attended the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy at Fort Bliss TX. He was also stationed at Redstone Arsenal AL and after retirement worked in the unexploded ordnance cleanup industry.

Jim Davis was my first Sergeant Major. A young second lieutenant such as me couldn't have asked for a finer senior NCO to counsel and guide me. I was a better officer because of him. May he rest in peace. Thank-you for your service, Sergeant Major.
