Clifford James, my Mother's Uncle, was a farmer who never married and had no children.
He was red haired with a ruddy completion and had a hair-triggered, hot temper that matched his appearance. He smoked Chesterfield's (smelled like burning saw dust) and occasionally hand rolled cigarettes (Prince Albert) and enjoyed fishing, deer hunting and trapping. He loved animals (had a hound named Sport that had a temper that matched his; also had a quail named Bob that he found in one of his leg-hold traps - almost froze to death with a shattered leg - amputated the leg, carved Bob a wooden leg that matched so well, Bob could run on it, and he stayed Clifford's pet until he died of old age.....I remember him running on the porch and staying around Uncle Clifford whenever I visited Dawt, Missouri).
He lost his left arm (just below the elbow) to a hay baler, self applied a tourniquet, & drove his pick-up home to get help and a trip to the hospital. Uncle Clifford never wore a prosthetic, and never allowed the handicap to affect his life or work.
Everything about Uncle Clifford reflected toughness and he came from a family of Ozark country people who were as independent, hard-working and honest as could be - I often think of them when I reflect on the best qualities of an American.
