The son of Klarence Kenney & Esther Laughlin; Postville High School '32; In 1938 he enlisted in the Navy. On 24 Dec 1943 he was a crew member of the USS Leary, part of the escort for the USS Card, when she was hit by 3 torpedoes, fired by the German submarine U-275. Ninety seven of her crew of 149 were lost in the North Atlantic, including Carleton and Commander James Ellsworth Kyes; 57 crew members were rescued by the USS Schenck.
Carleton was engaged to marry Miss Reta Rice of Boston at the time of his death.
