Lawrence was born July 1, 1922, in McLean County to Mathias and Margaret (Finken) Lies. He was raised on the family farm and educated in rural schools.

Lawrence married Emma Buechler on Nov. 15, 1950. He worked for Standard Oil for 25 years and also owned and operated the Douglas Bar from 1972 to 1976. He was a member of the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Douglas. After 44 years of living in Douglas he and Emma moved to Garrison in 1995 and became members of St. Nicholas Catholic Church.

Lawrence was a member of the Douglas Nifty Fifties and Garrison Senior Citizens. He was also active in numerous community affairs and served on the Douglas School Board. He loved bowling, fishing, hunting, playing cards, and helped clean fish for many years during the annual North Dakota Governor's Cup. More than anything Lawrence loved spending time with his family, and any excuse for a family get-together was a good reason.

Lawrence is survived by: his daughters, Jolene (Duane) Baumgartner, Rice Lake, Candace (Gerry) Berntson, Garrison, Lori (Loren) Jepson, Killdeer, Pam (Mike) Wilcox, of Douglas, and Shelly (John) Krebsbach, Garrison; 12 grandchildren, Mindy (Darren) Haugen, Jamie (Carrie) Baumgartner, Timothy (Tracy) Berntson, Dustin (Jill) Berntson, Benjamin (Marisa) Berntson, Janell (Ross) Jepson, Marci (Ryan) Conklin, Trevor (Jessica) Krueger, Jon Wilcox, Kari (Nathan) Welstad, Ashley (Cory) Krebsbach, and Alex Krebsbach; 18 great-grandchildren, Parker Haugen, Owen and Colin Baumgartner, Anna and Max Berntson, Dillan, Noah, and Dane Jepson, Emily Berntson, Teagan Wilcox, Logan and Hailee Conklin, Bailey, Brendan, and Brooklyn Berntson, Kaden and Kaylie Welstad, and Kolten Krueger; sisters, Luella Lukach, Garrison, LaVerne Malling, Bismarck; sisters-in-law, Lydia Fliginger, Garrison, Alma Buechler, Salt Lake City, Utah; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Emma; infant granddaughter, Susan Wilcox; brothers, Alvin and Donald; and sisters, Mildred Schriener and Doreen Lies.
