Chester Robert Schmidt, age 85, of Hondo passed away Saturday, Oct. 30, 2010.

Born Dec. 10, 1924, in Hondo, he was the son of Louis J. and Ernestina E. Schmidt, who precede him in death.

He was baptized April 10, 1925, and confirmed June 4, 1939. He was a faithful, lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where he served in several capacities throughout the years.

As a very young boy, Chester started in the ranching business, helping his dad on the ranch. He began hauling cattle for area ranchers and continued doing so for many years, Ranching was not only his livelihood, but also his hobby. He enjoyed spending time at the ranch and worked many hours there.

He served two years in the Army during the Korean War and, after fulfilling his duty, returned to Hondo and married Ottalie Goldapp. He and Ottalie enjoyed traveling to many different places throughout the United States and Europe.

Although Chester was an only child, he welcomed Ottalie's family with open arms. Thanksgiving was a special time as all gathered at the ranch for fun, food, hunting, time around the campfire, and love.

They raised their children in Hondo, and Chester always made sure his family had what they needed. He was proud of all his family and enjoyed spending time with them.

Among his favorite times at the ranch was during hunting season. He taught his children the joys of hunting and the enjoyment of God's creations in the great outdoors. He enjoyed being around the hunters and was excited whenever anyone "bagged" some game.

Chester was always happy to share a story or memory with family and friends or anyone who would listen. He never met a stranger. He will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ottalie; son, Louis Schmidt and wife Carol Sue; daughter, Carol Schmidt Mangold and husband Dickie; granddaughters, Cora Beth Schmidt and Margaret Schmidt; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Kathleen Goldapp, Edwin and Katherine Goldapp, John and Edith Burris; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also survived by Lanham Mangold, Logan and Trent; Leyton and Michele Mangold, Kandi, Korey, and Kolton; Richelle Mangold, Kyon and Keydon; and Tricia and Todd Haby.
