Roena Collins Honeycutt, 84, of Fuquay-Varina, died peacefully on Monday, February 18, 2008 and is now in the presence of her Lord.

Born on December 16, 1923, in Angier, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Furman Greene and Bertha Walton Collins. She was the wife of J.P. Honeycutt, who passed away in 1990. Mrs. Honeycutt is also preceded in death by her brothers, Dr. Thomas G. Collins, Joseph C. Collins, F.G. Collins Jr., "Baby Collins" and sisters, Dottie C. Earp and Shirley (Alvis) VanStavern.

Roena received her degree in English and Social Science in 1944 from East Carolina Teachers College, then received her Master's Degree in English in 1965 from East Carolina University. Over the years, she taught English in Warsaw, Fuquay-Springs, Angier and Coats. In 1967, she was asked to start the English Department at Wake Technical Community College where she retired in 1985. In 1984, she received a Certificate of Recognition for Teaching Excellence by the N.C. Community College System.

Mrs. Honeycutt was very pleased and proud to have former students come up to her and mention being in her English classes and how much they benefitted from her efforts. School plays, Senior Class trips and working on the school annuals were some of the activities she enjoyed with her students. Most of her time was spent with family and school activities. However, she did enjoy the Womens's Club, VFW Auxiliary, her Sunday School Class, helping to start the Fuquay-Varina Public Library and playing bridge with many friends over the years. But her greatest joy came from her children and grandchildren and watching Carolina Basketball.

Mrs. Honeycutt is survived by her two daughters, Nancy H. Boone and husband Frankie of Fuquay-Varina and Sylvia H. Stroupe and husband Britt of Pinehurst. Son, Dr. Jimmie Honeycutt and wife Janet of Fuquay-Varina and sister, Roberta C. Woolard and husband Paul of Angier. Grandchildren, Holly Boone, Jennifer B. Powell and husband Blake, Jonathan Boone, Leslie Fish, Andy Fish, Phillip Fish, Jane Honeycutt and Jay Honeycutt. Numerous nieces, nephews, friends and relatives. The family greatly appreciates the loving care given by Sarah and Craig Creel, Oaks of Carolina and United Hospice.

A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, February 21, 2008 at 11:00 AM at Wake Chapel Christian Church, Fuquay-Varina, NC.
