He is preceded in death by his parents, David and Gertrude Awana; brother, Clement Awana and sister, Gertrude Pangelina. He is survived by his wife, Wilma Awana; daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Bob Walters; daughter, Debra Miller; grandsons, Jon Houser and Kevin Miller; granddaughter, Kellie Miller; 3 great grandchildren; sisters, Jean Pua, Dorothy Garcia and Bea Chong as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Francis was a native of Hawaii and he traveled the United States for six months before coming to California to stay. He worked at the Old Lebec Hotel as the maintenance man where he met and fell in love with Wilma who worked as a waitress. They were married for 52 years. In 1958 they adopted Cheryl and Debra and considered them to be the daughters of their hearts. He and Wilma bred Silky Terriers for over 20 years and were members of the Silky Terrier Club of America. Francis worked for the El Tejon/Mettler School Districts as head custodian and school bus driver. He was a hard worker but always had time for his family. His priorities were always straight. He smiled for everyone and could light up a room when he entered it. Everyone called him Papa or Mr. A. He was quite and unassuming. He loved wood-working and making new things out of old. He was a great cook and loved to cook for everyone. Francis was an accomplished vocalist and played the ukulele. He was an excellent father and grandfather and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. For additional service or floral delivery information, please contact Basham Funeral Care at 873-8200.
