A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service in Lancaster April 4, 1865, as a private with Co. B, 215th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 31, 1865. At enlistment, he overstated his age by two years.
He married Susan Hamner in 1873 and fathered Sonny[?], Susan (b. 10/01/71, d. 01/13/72), and Jessie (b. 07/23/76, d. 06/12/78). In 1880, he lived in Manor Township, Lancaster County.
