Raymond E. Bates Sr., 80, of Turners Station, died Thursday at Tri-County Baptist Hospital in La Grange. He was a farmer and a member of Port Royal Baptist Church. His first wife, Dorothy Frances Tingle Bates, died in 1952. His second wife, Bessie Mae Goldsberry Bates, died in 1990. Survivors include daughters, Joan Taylor of Madison, Ind., Carolyn Brown of Nicholasville and Judy Taylor of Campbellsburg; sons, Raymond E. "Buster" Bates Jr. of Worthville, Noble E. Bates of Sanders and Michael Lee Bates of Port Royal; brothers, Leon Bates and Robert Bates, both of Carrollton; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, Carrollton, with visitation from 5 to 8 tonight. Burial will be in Port Royal Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, 1885 Dixie Highway, Suite 250, Fort Wright, Ky. 41011, or American Diabetes Association, 745 W. Main St., Louisville, Ky. 40202.
