William enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 14 August 1862 in Clayton, Barbour County, Alabama. He was mustered as a private in Company K, 29th Alabama Infantry. He was promoted to rank of Corporal on 14 August 1863. He died in Mobile, Alabama on 6 October 1863 of congestive fever.

On William's CMSR (compiled military service record) there are two different death dates. One is 3 October 1863 & the other 6 October 1863. His cemetery record shows death date of 6 October 1863.

William is the son ot Elisha Arrington (1812-1869) & Mary Jane E. Weeks (1820-???). He married Missouri Ann Cook.
