Joe Karl Mitschelen, 46, of Malott, WA, passed away in the presence of his family on May 22, 2009, at Evergreen Hospital in Kirkland, WA. Joe was born to Gero and Margaret Mitschelen on March 14, 1963, at St. Martin's Hospital in Tonasket, WA. The family moved to Howell, MI, in August, 1965, and then to Cottage Grove, OR, in March, 1968, before settling back into the Okanogan Valley in January, 1969. Joe began his education at O'Keefe Elementary School in Okanogan, WA, before the family moved into their current home in Malott in March, 1972. He graduated with honors from Okanogan High School in 1981, receiving numerous academic awards including Masonic Junior Achievement, Kiwanis Student of the Month and "Who's Who of American High School Students." Joe was active in drama, band, track and competed at the state level in wrestling. He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America, receiving their highest rank, Eagle Scout, in 1979, and has remained active individually and with his sons in the local troops. An appetite for knowledge, instilled in him by his grandmother, and a lifelong commitment to serving others, came together for Joe at Michigan State University, where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Advertising and Communications, while participating in the Army Advanced ROTC Program from 1981 through 1985. He completed Army Basic Training at Fort Sill, OK, during the summer of his sophomore year and received his Commission in the United States Army as a 2nd Lieutenant on June 9th, 1984. Joe continued to serve his country as a decorated officer in the Army Reserves for 27 years, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel on March 31, 2006, and had been most recently attached to Region X ARNORTH in Bothell, WA. Joe moved back to Eastern Washington in 1985, joining the advertising department at the Omak Chronicle in Omak, WA. Shortly after his return, he re-kindled a friendship with Teri Gayle Tubbs, which would continue to grow for the rest of his life. They were married on December 20, 1986, at the New Life Center in Okanogan, WA, and began a tradition of celebrating their anniversary monthly for over 22 years. Their path together took them back to Michigan State, where Joe worked for the Michigan Lottery and then on to Wenatchee, WA, where he worked for KW3 Radio, while Teri finished her education. In 1989, they returned to make their home in Malott and Joe went to work for the Okanogan County Public Works Department. Hobbies together included touring the Northwest on their motorcycle as members of the GoldWing Touring Association, traveling the country and collecting anything "M&M's." In November, 1999, Joe's family was made complete with the addition of his sons, Brady Dwayne and Dakota James. The following year, Joe joined the Rural Community Assistance Corporation as Rural Environmental Development Specialist and served as their legislative representative until his passing. His desire for community service continued on many levels throughout his life. Joe was active in the Republican Party, serving as County Precinct Committee Officer, State Committee Chairman for Okanogan County and campaigned in 2000, for Washington State Lieutenant Governor. He completed his teaching degree through Heritage College in Omak in 1997, and worked in the Brewster and Okanogan School Districts as a Substitute Teacher and assisted with the Okanogan Wrestling program for several years. Most recently, Joe was elected to the Okanogan School Board in September, 2002, and served as their legislative representative. Through all this, Joe will be remembered first and foremost as a family man. The most important things in his life were his wife, his sons and his parents. Joe tried to spend as much time with them as possible and enjoyed traveling and exploring new places together. Each outing was an adventure, seeking out zoos, amusement parks, educational exhibits and roller coasters, wherever they went. Family trips back to Michigan were frequent - keeping his immediate family close to their relatives and in touch with their heritage. At home, he worked side by side with his father, maintaining their family orchard and together teaching his sons life skills, including carpentry, mechanics and farming. Whether going to Disney World, hauling windmills, repairing a water line or camping in the Okanogan, Joe sought to make every minute with his family special.

Joe is survived by his wife, Teri; sons, Brady and Dakota; parents, Gero and Margaret Mitschelen of Malott, WA; uncles and the families of Robert Coddington and wife, Roberta of Pinckney, MI, Harold Coddington and wife, Helen of Dandridge, TN and Russell Coddington and wife, Doris of Howell, MI; cousins and the families of Audrey and husband, Richard Raden of Lake City, MI and Alan Mitschelen of San Diego, CA; sister-in-law, Ellie Beach of Omak, WA and brother-in-law, Keith Tubbs and wife, Nadine of Snoqualmie, WA, and their families; and numerous cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews from his extended families in New York, Vermont, California, Indiana and Virginia. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Albert (1978) and Olive Coddington (2007) and Levi (1981) and Genevieve Mitschelen (1972); uncle, Dale Mitschelen (1969); in-laws, Warren (1983) and Evelyne Tubbs (2007); and sister-in-law, Gaye Wiggs (2003).
Joe's love for life, devotion to family, spirit of service and personal faith, remained unshaken throughout his life and will continue on as an inspiration to all who shared his journey. Visitation will be held Thursday, June 4, 2009, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Precht-Harrison-Nearents Chapel.
