|Birth: ||Jul. 2, 1913|

He was born at Red Rock, the son of Bettis and Belle Atkinson. He married Johnna L. Blackwood on Feb. 18, 1937 and was married for 47 years until her death in 1984.
Mr Atkinson was a lifelong resident of Newton County and was a retired farmer. He was the assistant postmaster at Deer for many years and was involved in community and civic activities and was a friend to many.
He served on the Deer School Board for 20 years and the Newton County Nursing Home Board for 12 years. He also was on the board of directors of the Newton County Bank for 10 years; a Mason and a member of the First Baptist Church of Jasper. Mr. Atkinson's greatest pleasure in life was working and caring for his family.
Mr. Atkinson was preceded in death by his parents, Bettis and Belle Atkinson; his wife, Johnna L. Atkinson; two brothers, Carroll and Joe Atkinson; and two sisters, Opal Ewing and Lois Flood.
He was 89 when he passed away "following a courageous battle with cancer" at the Newton County Nursing Home. I have a copy of his obit from Newton County Times.
