Wife of Samuel Swann

She took furs over the mountains by huge covered wagons pulled by eight horses each to Ashville, NC to sell and hauled pig iron on the way back. On a return trip she was robbed and her son James (1799-1834) was murdered. She had the iron bands removed from the wagon wheels so that an area the size of a gold coin could be cut out around the wheel. The coins for the sale of the furs were placed in the scooped out areas and the metal bands were then replaced.
