Bernice lost her mother, Frieda, during the world flu epidemic of 1918. Her mother died leaving her father James with the challenge of working and raising 5 children.
Bernice's Aunt Maud Genevieve (Kennedy) Brenn had no children. Maud and her husband Sam wanted to have children. The families talked, it was very hard decision for her father James, but it was decided. Maud and Sam Brenn adopted Bernice and her sister Ruth.
The girls loved California and Maud (a teacher) and Sam made sure both girls had excellent educations.
