Sarah Emma Fincher Riddle-Barnes was born May 1, 1925 the daughter of Constance Fincher and Minnie Frances Hopkins Fincher in Bucknell, Iowa, a coal mining camp and attended school in Tama, Iowa. She was united in Marriage to Ralph Jerome Riddle on August 21, 1942. To that union were born 10 children all of whom survive; Ralph E. Riddle and Jeanette of Oxford, Alabama; Richard A. Riddle and Diane of Clearmont, Mo.; Ronald L. Riddle of Spain; Linda M. Meier and Ron of Clarinda, Iowa; Patricia J. Van Fossen and Larry of Braddyville, Iowa; Rebecca J. Parker of Braddyville, Iowa; Constance L. Riddle of Olympia, Washington; Robert E. Riddle and Sandy of New Market, Iowa; Mona P. Jackson and Kenny of College Springs, Iowa; Timothy C. Riddle of Clarinda. Ralph passed away September 30, 1971, in Braddyville. She was then married to Robert Barnes on January 23, 1985, in Odessa, Texas.
Sally, as she was known to her friends, Aunt Dude by her nieces and nephews, loved entertaining, with her delicious home cooked meals and spent many hours playing cards with both family and friends. In her earlier years much time was spent making many of her girls clothes as they were growing up. Another love of hers was doing all kinds of crafts, as I am sure many of you have something that she made whether it be plastic canvas, crochet, or embroidery, which she did to the very end. Sally enjoyed traveling, seeing the sights in 40 plus states, through a bus window or a car windshield. Throughout her life she spent many hours in her vegetable and flower gardens, canning and freezing countless quarts of fruits and vegetables. She took great pride in her bread baking and cinnamon rolls, which were requested for many family gatherings. Her children remember the delicious fried chicken and homemade egg noodles. Sally found time after children were gone to be a volunteer with the Red Cross for 10 years.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husbands; and brothers John, Sylvester, Ralph, Raymond and Paul Fincher; a grandson, Bradley Jerome Hutt; and a great-grandson, Jackson Reed Riddle.
She is survived by all 10 children, 27 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, four step grandchildren, 10 step great-grandchildren, sister Lucille Sterner of Boone, Iowa; two sisters-in-law Betty Ogle of Missouri and Barbara Riddle of Iowa City, Iowa; nieces, nephews and many friends.
Funeral services will be Saturday, May 2, 2009 at Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel with Ted Welch officiating. Interment was at Braddyville Cemetery, Braddyville, Iowa.
