Samuel Allen 1588-1648 was one of the original settlers of Windsor, Connecticut, and he is the eighth great-grandfather of this writer. He is said to have arrived here in 1635. On a large plaque decorated with a beautiful bronze ship in the middle of Windsor his name can be seen along with many other original Windsor settlers. It is known that he came from England (as all the settlers did) but whether he came from the English towns of "Braunton," or "Braintree" or "Chelmsford" or "Dorchester" or "with the Dorchester Company" or "with the Mr. [Rev Thomas] Hooker 's Company" or "on the Mary and John" and so forth - is not known, because although all these have been authoritatively suggested— they really are only conjectures found in various historical resources. He most likely arrived with his own brother Deacon Thomas Allen. There is a suggestion that his parents also came, as the death dates of "Ould Mr. Allen" and "Ould Mrs. Allen" are listed with Windsor CT vitals. Other descendants of Samuel Allen of Windsor, CT, also played a part in many aspect of the Revolutionary War. Joseph Allen's wife "Betty [Parsons] Allen"of Northampton, MA is famous for having "contributed six stalwart soldier sons" to the cause. (She had twelve children in all.) The Northampton, Massachusetts D.A.R. bears her name "The Betty Allen Chapter.) Among the descendants of Samuel and Ann Allen have been many prominent men and women, particularly pastors, deacons, and ministers. The last Allen to live in Northampton (d. 1951) may be have been Clara Channing Allen [# 120030433,] a maiden lady who was a court reporter/stenographer. She lived at 22 Paradise Rd., now part of Smith College.

He died at age 60 and was buried on 5 March 1648 in the Enfield Street Cemetery in Enfield, Connecticut. At age 60 he was buried on April 28, 1648. Upon his widow's remarriage to William Hulbird [Hulburd/Hurlbut] she moved her family [except for the youngest, Obadiah, who at age 2 was adopted by his childless uncle Dea. Thomas Allen of Middletown, CT] to Northampton, MA [during its early founding years c 1657] where she died on November 13, 1687." One may run across conjectures such as that Samuel Allen could not have been 60 years old when he died, because his wife Ann was so much younger, marrying again and living 40 more years. And we really don't have any records of his birth thus far (not easy to get, in that he was born in England.) Samuel Allen's name is at the top of the list of Allen names and dates on the large memorial stone at the Enfield Street Cemetery, and next to his name it says 1588-1648. The date of 1588 may have been his father's birth date, especially if, as suggested here, his parents were in Connecticut with him. The publication lists no author or publication date. Samuel Allen's name is at the top of the list of Allen names and dates on the large memorial stone at the Enfield Street Cemetery, and next to his name it says 1588-1648. It has also been reported that they don't really know if Samuel Allen is actually buried there in that family plot, as that piece of land was not purchased for use as a cemetery until later.
In Northampton, Ann Allen & William Hulbird had either two or three children William, Anna and Abigail. (there was a suggestion that
"Anna" and "Abigail" were really just one person, due to some record problem.)
The oldest Allen son Samuel started an "Allen dynasty" in Northampton MA, one could say that it was in 1657, and it lasted three hundred years, until 1964 or so, and now is alive again, with this writer's having moved back here, following the lead of her 3 children!

In a limited edition publication entitled "The Allen and Bradford Lines of Descent of President William Allen and the Wheelock and Huguenot Lines of Descent of His Wife Maria Malleville Wheelock," his dates are listed as 1612-1648. This birth date seems more realistic. The publication also lists his father, with no dates, as Samuel Allyn of Chelmsford, Essex, England. The date of 1588 may have been his father's birth date, especially if, as suggested here, his parents were in Connecticut with him. The publication lists no author or publication date. Based on dates listed for some of Samuel's descendants it was published in mid-20th century. It was found among my parents' papers.
A website for Allen family genealogy says that Windsor vital records lists "Ould Mr. Allyn," who died at Windsor September 12, 1675, and "Old Mrs. Allyn," who died there August 5, 1649. Samuel Allen's wife was named Ann. Her maiden name is unknown, although sometimes she is mistakenly given the maiden name (Whitmore) of the wife of the "Braintree, MA - Samuel Allen" — her name was also Ann—one factor of which has made understanding the Allen genealogy very difficult.
[For those of you who have come to this memorial to do your genealogical work, be it known that the children and some further descendants of the early Allen families, particularly that of this Samuel Allen d 1648, of Windsor,Hartford County,CT and that of Samuel Allen d.1669 of Braintree, Norfolk County MA, and also of Allens from Sandwich, Barnstable County, and sometimes Allens from Ipswich, MA, are frequently mixed together on the online family trees that this writer has seen. On such trees one can see {FOR EXAMPLE} children born one year in Windsor, CT, the following year in Braintree, MA maybe in a couple of years in Sandwich, MA, and then in Windsor, CT again. But his would not have been at all likely, as Windsor, CT and Braintree, MA are over 100 miles apart—and you know how the roads were then (what roads? this writer likes to point out.) The hope is that tree owners will awaken and choose one particular Allen ancestor for the founder of their own Allen dynasty out of the several original English Allen family groups, and abandon the idea of putting as many Allen "ancestors" as possible on their tree. And perhaps some people will take it upon themselves to do a thorough study on their own Allen ancestral background. Possibly out of this could come models of the various configurations of Allen ancestors that could be copied. What is largely being copied now seems thoroughly inaccurate.]
Samuel Allen of Windsor, CT had six children who lived into adulthood (and possibly one/some that died young.) The name Allen was spelled in various ways at various times in various records: e.g. Allen, Allyn, Allin, Alling. How the name was spelled may or may not have been meaningful to those families.

[Obadiah's will, written c 1706/7 proves that Elizabeth Sanford had already
died and he had married again by that time—to Mary Savage/Wetmore, who outlived him, so Elizabeth's death date could not have been 1712.] His children were Obadiah Jr., Thomas, Mary, Thankful, Sarah, Samuel, John, and Elizabeth.
One interesting tidbit is that the two oldest sons of both Samuel Allens married sisters. The two oldest sons of Samuel Allen of Windsor married Woodford sisters, and the two oldest sons of Samuel Allen of Braintree married Partridge sisters!
As well as being a "founding father," Samuel Allen is also touched by fame, being the direct ancestor of the Revolutionary War patriot Ethan Allen 1738-1789, [born in Litchfield, CT, died in Burlington, VT. (Find-a-Grave Memorial # 19 )] — through his second son Nehemiah Allen and Sarah Woodford. This writer is a descendant of Nehemiah's older brother Deacon Samuel Allen. Other descendants of Samuel Allen of Windsor, CT, also played a part in many aspect of the Revolutionary War. Joseph Allen's wife "Betty [Parsons] Allen"of Northampton, MA is famous for having "contributed six stalwart soldier sons" to the cause. (She had twelve children in all.) The Northampton, Massachusetts D.A.R. bears her name "The Betty Allen Chapter.) Among the descendants of Samuel and Ann Allen have been many prominent men and women, particularly pastors, deacons, and ministers. The last Allen to live in Northampton (d. 1951) may be have been Clara Channing Allen [# 120030433,] a maiden lady who was a court reporter/stenographer. She lived at 22 Paradise Rd., now part of Smith College.
Here is something that was written long ago about Samuel Allen 1588-1648: and contributed by # 47285538 "He was a farmer by trade. He was known as a man of public spirit, and was given positions of trust by his fellow citizens such as on March 5, 1644, when he served as a juryman. He died at age 60 and was buried on 5 March 1648 in the Enfield Street Cemetery in Enfield, Connecticut. At age 60 he was buried on April 28, 1648. Upon his widow's remarriage to William Hulbird [Hulburd/Hurlbut] she moved her family [except for the youngest, Obadiah, who at age 2 was adopted by his childless uncle Dea. Thomas Allen of Middletown, CT] to Northampton, MA [during its early founding years c 1657] where she died on November 13, 1687." One may run across conjectures such as that Samuel Allen could not have been 60 years old when he died, because his wife Ann was so much younger, marrying again and living 40 more years.
