James Edward Scribner was born in Rutland, Vt. and died in LeRoy, MI April 1, 1917, aged 74 years 1 month and 12 days. In 1873 he was married to Miss Della Oberla. In 1877 they located in Wayland township, Allegan Co. near Bradley, where they lived for six years and from which place they moved to LeRoy. Mr. Scribner was a carpenter by trade, but in later years had followed gardening and had spent several winters in the Soldiers' home in Grand Rapids. He had a long and eventful army history. His first enlistment was in the Fourteenth Michigan Infantry under Captain John D. Donley. At the expiration of three years he returned to Michigan and re-enlisted with Capt. James Stewart's recruits for the same regiment. Mr. Scribner was in the battle of Vicksburg, Lookout Mountain, Gettysburg, Shilo and was in Sherman's march to the sea. He was three times wounded and spent a total of eight months in army hospitals. He was confined in Libby prison but escaped along with a few others by tunneling and recognized the colors. He was honorably discharged in March 1864. Besides his wife he leaves five sons: Lewis E., Frank H. and Fred A. of Muskegon; Harry J. of Elkhart, IN; Charles R. of Hopkins, MI and Mrs. Ella E. Poiting of Seattle, WA; a sister Mrs. Ellen Allen of LeRoy, and a brother, William Scribner of Shelbyville, MI. Mr.Scribner was a member of Randolph Post No.165, while that organization had sufficient numbers to retain its identity in this village. The funeral was held from the M. R. Church Friday, April 6, with Rev. Benedict and Funeral Director Anderson in charge. Interment in Maple Hill Cemetery.
