Glendora "Betty" Charles Kirk, 97, of Colorado Springs, CO, formerly of Danville, died July 11, 2006 [at Penrose Main Hospital] in Colorado Springs. She was born September 15, 1908 to William T., and Laura (Bedster) Charles. Mrs. Kirk was the widow of Wallace "Ben" Kirk. She attended I.U., graduated from the Louisville Conservatory of Music and Central Normal College. She received Bachelor Degrees in Music and Arts. She taught music 30 years in the West Baden Springs and Avon Public Schools, retiring in 1964. She and her husband built, owned, and operated the Kirk Motel in Danville from 1951 to 1963. Betty was a member of the Heritage Baptist Church in Colorado Springs, the D.A.R., and Kappa Delta Sorority. Services: 1 p.m. Saturday, July 15, in Weaver & Randolph Funeral Home, Danville, with visitation 11 a.m. until service time at 1 p.m. Burial: Danville South Cemetery. Survivors: a niece, Judy McFarland, of Greenwood; many 4th and 5th generation former Avon students, and her special friends in Colorado Springs.
In 1910, her family resided in Orange County at French Lick. At the time she was the only child listed in the census for William T. and Laura Charles. She was born in Indiana.
Mrs. Kirk was my music teacher when I was in first grade (1962-1963).
The following is a tribute to Mrs. Kirk from the Avon High School Class of 1961 as published in the 1961 Treasure Chest (yearbook):
"Our Mrs. Kirk"
We, the Seniors of 1961, would like to offer a special tribute to a very dear teacher of ours. As we rushed through our school years, we somehow have forgotten to say thanks to our kind teachers for their help.
Mrs. Kirk, or "Betty" as she is so fondly called, was our first grade music and art teacher. She took us through finger painting and many funny "works of art" during the years that followed. She taught high school art to some of us.
She has given us encouragement many times, although we are certain that she couldn't tell what we were trying to depict by pictures. We are positive that our music sounded off-key, but through all of our struggles, Mrs. Kirk has had a kind smile and her sunny disposition has been constant — how she accomplished this is a marvel to us.
To you, Mrs. Kirk, we would like to say, "Thanks for being you." We will never forget you.
