Wayne Barton served as a member of Captain Jesse Billingsley's Company of "Mina (Bastrop) Volunteers" at the Battle of San Jacinto. After Texas won it's independence from Mexico, Wayne became the first Sheriff of Travis County, and ended up marrying the daughter of General Edward Burleson, Mary Jane Burleson. As early as 1844, Wayne had a parting of the ways with his brother in law, Rufus Burleson. During a scuffle, that led to gun fire, Rufus received a wound that eventually led to his death. This led to somewhat of a family feud, and two of Rufus's brothers ended up killing Wayne Barton near his homestead in Washington County around the end of December of 1848. History did not record the actual burial place of Mr. Barton. His wife Mary Jane later married a James C. Stephenson.
