Graduated from University of Iowa Law School in 1894 and entered the practice of Julius Lischer and uncle George Bawden in Davenport. Later joined Davidson & Lane to take charge of their abstract and loan dept. He served as Scott County Asst County Atty, nominated by the Republican party for County Atty and elected 6th Ward Alderman. He also managed the Valley Place Investment Co, organized to sell lots in W. Davenport's Bawden's Addition (grandfather's acreages).
He married Edna Cameron Haskin, dtr of Chas and Alice Martha Robeson Haskin on 7 Sept 1905 in Davenport's Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. Mr. Haskins operated a livery stable on W. 4th St. Stephen and Edna had no children and lived with the family at 1315 E. 11th.
Stephen was an extremely outgoing and popular man, member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity at Iowa, the Commercial and Outing Clubs on Brady St., and worked for many Davenport charities. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral and served as vestryman and clerk, and treasurer for the Iowa Diocese of the Episcopal Church.
His sudden death of a stroke at age 37 stunned Davenport. Flags were flown at half-mast; the Mayor issued a special tribute and newspapers carried a lengthy article " Stephen Bawden had more friends than any man in Davenport, his popularity extending to all classes".
Edna lived with sister-in-law widowed Jennie Bawden (George). She married James D. Mason in his parents' Des Moines, Polk, IA home. James was the son of James B. Mason of Davenport and a grandnephew of Mary Williams Eldridge - Jacob's 2nd wife and mother of 9 children.
