William McEwen was the son of John and Sarah McEwen of Scotland. He went to Northampton County, Pennsylvania to learn the trade of blacksmith. He came in 1823 on a wagon train from nine miles from Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania to Clinton Township, Seneca County, Ohio He was the tenth settler on the spot where Tiffin now stands and was the first blacksmith in Seneca County.
He married in Berwick, Pennsylvania, Sarah Johnson, born February 28, 1785, a daughter of John and Jerusha Kitchen Johnson. Jerusha came from Ireland to the United State, where she married John Johnson.
William and Sarah had 21 children, 16 of whom grew up to have families. Their children were: John, Samuel, Robert, Henry, William II, Sarah, Elizabeth, Almira, George, James, Mary (Polly), Margaret, Permelia, Rachel, Anna, and Martha.
