James Franklin Guthrie, also was known as "Pomp" to his children and grandchildren, was born and raised in Jackson and Marshall County, Alabama. He was the first son of James W. Guthrie (1844 - 1929), a farmer and veteran of the American Civil War for the Confederate Army. His mother, Hannah L. Stevenson (1845 - 1920) was also born in Alabama. Her parents were David and Joanna Stevenson.
Pomp Guthrie was married a total of 4 times. His first wife Addie Willmon, was born and raised in Alabama also. They were united in marriage on the eve of Christmas in 1889 in Jackson County, Alabama. They had just one child together which didn't survive past it's infancy. Addie Guthrie died at a young age herself. Passing away around the beggining of the 20th century. She died in her early 30's. Her sister, Joanna Willmon (known as "Joe") was living with James and Addie right before she got sick. This sister became his second wife shortly after Addie's death.
