Jacob and his brothers Joachim Holst and Claus Holst all from Belvidere, Minnesota left their families behind to enlist in the Civil War together on 27 February 1864. Jacob and Joachim died while serving in Arkansas in the fall of 1864. Claus survived the war to lead a long life in Belvidere. Claus was a pioneer settler of Belvidere, having arrived there in the fall of 1855.
