Dr. Thomas Michie Bowyer was born in Botetourt county, Va., February 22, 1830, and died at Battle Creek Sanitarium, Mich., September, 1900. He received a classical education at University of Virginia, and afterwards graduating in medicine from medical department in 1852. He then entered the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1853. Dr. Bowyer was elected a member of the Medical Society of Virginia in 1872, and on account of his eminent services rendered this body, was elected an honorary fellow in 1895. He was up to 1889 member of the Medical Examining Board of Virginia; was mayor of Bedford City for seven years, in which city for many years he enjoyed a fine and well deserved reputation, both as a general practitioner and surgeon. He practiced his profession for a while in Roanoke, Va. For the last few years he was located at Santa Rosalia, State of Chihuahua, Mexico. In the Confederate army Dr. Bowyer was major of artillery, appointed inspector of military companies by Gen. R. E. Lee; attached to staff of General F. S. C. Breckenridge and General Kemper. His contributions to medical literature, while not numerous, were of considerable value, notably one paper, "Remarkable Case of Laparotomy, Va. Med. Mo., 1880. Dr. Bowyer was twice married, but has no living children. His final resting place was in Logwood [sic] (should be Longwood) Cemetery, at Bedford City, Va.
