Joseph was born in England. He was baptized at St Peter's Church in Hartshorne, Derbyshire, England. He married Mary Margaret Evans in about 1700. After the birth of their first first son, Thomas, they traveled to Germantown, which today is part of Philadelphia, and Samuel was an innkeeper. In 1706 their daughter, Elizabeth, was born. The next year a son, Samuel, was born, but he died only a few weeks old. Joseph died in 1708 at the age of 36, three months before the birth of his daughter, Margaret.
