Thomas raised two families with a total of sixteen children, eight in each marriage, 14 sons & 2 daughters. First family was in Arkansas and then he moved his second family to Riddle, Oregon in 1904 by train. His only living son, James Regan Bates (from first marriage) & James wife, Victoria, and family were already established in Riddle, Oregon after moving here from Arkansas about 1894. Thomas and James bought property near Riddle where Thomas and his family lived. Thomas was wounded when struck by a falling tree on his home property in January 1910 and died from blood poisoning in the wound. His wife, Flora, and sons had a rough time surviving through the years after his death.

Military:

November 5, 1861 - Thomas was conscripted into the Confederate Army, joining Company G, 16th Arkansas Infantry in Fayetteville, Arkansas. He was 25 years old. He was present til' August 1862 and his record ends there. Thomas was promoted to Corporal on June 28, 1862. The unit fought at Pea Ridge during Thomas's service with the Confederate Army.

Thomas then, with his brother John, enlisted in the Union Army at Fayetteville, AR on February 14, 1863. Thomas was Principal Musician Drummer before being reduced back to the rank of Private. Thomas was in the same battles as his brother, John, at Prairie De Ann, Moscow and Jenkins Ferry, all during the Camden Expedition in 1864. They also fought in the small battle of Fayetteville on April 18, 1863.

On his Union Army Discharge papers (Company A, Arkansas First Union Infantry Regiment), Thomas was described as 5 foot 8 inches tall, dark complexion, blue eyes, and occupation: farmer.
