Gladys Hermina Ahrendt was born December 3, 1917, the daughter of Herman and Emilie (Onken) Schulz, on the family farm in Plymouth County. She attended country school and later helped to raise her siblings and work on the farm.

Gladys was baptized and confirmed at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Craig. She joined Christ Lutheran Church (Grant Township) when she married Bennie. She was an active member having taught Sunday School and confirmation classes, sang in the choir, and was involved with the women's groups. The family later transferred to St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Gladys was again involved with the women's groups, Altar Guild and quilting. She volunteered a great deal of time with the community. She delivered Meals on Wheels and spent time at Brentwood Good Samaritan Center assisting with various activities. She and Bennie also enjoyed gardening.
