Her mother named her Ann Marie in honor of Saint Ann and Mary Mother of Jesus. The story goes that after her first daughter Caroline died that Angelina Baratta, a devote Roman Catholic, prayed to these saints for another daughter. Caroline was born on July 23, 1923...Ann Marie was born July 23, 1932. Seeing this as a sign of an answered prayer Angelina kept her promise to name her daughter Ann Marie in their honor.
Ann Marie graduated from PS #23 school in Jersey City, NJ in 1947. Afterwards she briefly attended William L. Dickinson HS also in Jersey City.
In 1959 Ann Marie Baratta married Ronald John Meyers (1934-2003). The newlywed couple moved in with her father Frank Baratta and lived at 136 Broadway in Jersey City, NJ. Their union brought forth five children: Ronald Joseph (b. 1959), Angela (1961-1999), Raymond Paul (b. 1962), Roseann (b. 1966), and Annette (b. 1968). Their marriage ended in divorce in the mid 70s.
In 1990 she became a grandmother for the first and only time during her lifetime when her daughter Roseann gave birth to Jay D'Angelo. Her daughter Annette gave her a second, posthumous grandson when she gave birth to Ryan McKenna in 2009.
She could play the piano, and she loved to play bingo in the Mt. Carmel church hall. But her real passion was playing the numbers with the neighborhood bookie. She had a record of every number that came out from 1955 through the 70s. She would use this record to try and predict what number would come out based upon how many times it came out and how often. Her favorite number was 803, and she hit using that number on many occasions over the years. She loved Country and Western music, and some of her favorite artists were Hank Williams and Eddy Arnold.
Ann Marie lived the final years of her life at the Liberty House Nursing Home in Jersey City. In early April 2008 she was taken to the Jersey City Medical Center where she died from complications of dementia on April 3, 2008. She was laid to rest in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington, NJ next to her daughter Angela who was killed in a fire at an assisted living facility in 1999.
