In 1859, Ephrain was united in marriage to Matilda Rebecca Whitcomb, by Cary Weight. Matilda was born in 1843 in New York, daughter of a father born in Vermont and a mother born in New York. Whether Whitcomb was her maiden name is unknown. Her date and place of death is unknown. Their children listed in the Family History Sheet, dated July 11, 1898, and contained in his pension file, were:
Albert born 1870, in Minnesota.
Ai 1872, in Wisconsin.
Alfred 1874, in Dakota territory.
Alvin 1874, in Dakota territory.
Lydia 1878, in Wisconsin.
Fanny 1881
In the 1850 U.S. Census, Ephrain was living with his parents at Granby, Oswego County, New York. On September 10, 1850, the family was enumerated as consisting of the following: Lydia Whitcomb, age 53; Jasper Whitcomb, age 28; Mary Whitcomb, age 24; Elisha Whitcomb, age 21; and Ephrain Whitcomb, age 14. Ephrain later stated that his father, Ephrain Whitcomb, died in 1836, and his mother Lydia Whitcomb, in 1859. His brother Jasper then became the head of the family.
In the 1880 U. S. Census, Ephrain Whitcomb was listed as a 44 year old farmer living in Cumberland Township, Barron County, Wisconsin, with his 37 year old wife Matilda and their children: Albert, age 10; Ai, age 8; Alfred and Alvin, age 6; and 2 year old Lydia Whitcomb.
In 1890 U.S. Census, Special Schedule, Ephrain Whitcomb was listed as living in Turtle Lake Township, Barron County, Wisconsin, and as having served as a Corporal in Company A of the 8th Wisconsin Infantry, from August 14, 1861, to September 5, 1865, for total service of 4 years, and 21 days.
Ephrain was a Civil War veteran who enlisted August 15, 1861, at Waupaca, Wisconsin, to serve three years as a Private in the 8th Wisconsin Infantry. On October 11, 1861, he was mustered into Federal service with Company A at Madison, Wisconsin, to date from September 5, 1861. At that time he was listed as a 26 year old, 5'9" tall farmer, with brown hair, black eyes and a dark complexion, born in Granby, New York.
On the muster roll of July/August, 1863, it was noted that Ephrain was absent on furlough for 30 days, from August 27, 1863. On January 27, 1864, he was mustered out of Federal service at Saulsbury, Tennessee, in order to reenlist the next day for three years as a veteran volunteer, and thereby qualify for the $400.00 reenlistment bounty. His actual muster out and muster in date was to date from January 4, 1864. On the muster roll of May/June, 1864, it was noted that he was absent on veteran's furlough from June 24, to July 23, 1864. On September 5, 1865, he was mustered out of Federal service with Company A at Demopolis, Alabama. At that time it was noted that he was due $190.00 of his reenlistment bounty, less 95 cents for the loss of one haversack, and $6.00 for ordnance retained consisting of one musket and accouterments.
After his discharge, Ephrain returned to his home in Wisconsin, but soon moved to Lake City, Wabasha County, Minnesota, where he remained for seven years. In 1872, he moved to Ranson County, North Dakota, where he remained 3 years. In 1875, he moved to Baldwin, Wisconsin, where he remained 1 year. In 1876, he moved to Clear Lake, Washburn County, Wisconsin, where he remained 2 years. In 1878, he moved to Barron County, Wisconsin, where he was known to have lived in Almena and Turtle Lake Townships.
On January 8, 1887, Ephrain filed Application No. 593,358, for an Invalid Veteran's Pension, which was approved under Certificate No. 724,092. He apparently outlived his wife, as there is no record at the National Archives that Matilda filed for a Widow's Pension.

Obituary
WHITCOMB.
Ephraim Whitcomb, one of the very earliest settlers of this vicinity, died at his home near Perley on Wednesday, Feb. 3, from the effects of a stroke of paralysis. The funeral will be held at the Comstock Methodist church on Friday at 2 p.m.
Mr. Whitcomb was born in Oswego county, N.Y., on Apr. 12, 1835. He was one of the first to respond to the call for arms in the early days of the Civil war, and saw four years of active service with the celebrated 8th Wisconsin Volunteers, the regiment to which the celebrated eagle Old Abe belonged.
He came to Barron county about thirty-eight years ago, and settled on a homestead south of Comstock, where he lived for many years. He was fond of relating incidents of the pioneer days and among other things told of bringing supplies from Menomonie up Hay river in a boat.
Mr. Whitcomb was an honorable man, who did his full duty according to his light and to the best of his ability in whatever situation he was placed. [Thursday, February 4, 1915, Cumberland Advocate, Cumberland, Wisconsin.]
