Youngest of the five children of Jacob and Caroline Ludwig of Syracuse.

He died instantly at age 17 years in Syracuse of a 32-calibre gunshot to the chest. His body was found the next morning half on the bank and half in the water of the Oswego canal not far from his home. It was never determined if he had been murdered or had killed himself, and this case remained one of Syracuse's unsolved mysteries. "Ed" worked as a tailor in his father's shop at the family home, and also worked at the Iron Pier (a newly-opened Onondaga Lake resort) on weekends. He was generally acknowledged as an amiable young man of good habits and had no known enemies.
