Simon was a Dalmatian that my husband got the year before we met. I'm not sure who he got him from, but he was obviously abused.
Simon was a flincher. It didn't matter if you wanted to feed him or pet him, he would automatically think that he was going to get hit. It took a long time and a lot of love for him to come to the point that he would not flinch as much, yet it never fully went away. At meal time, he would inhale his food. Most likely due to the fact that we believed they might have starved him at times.
Simon was a loving dog, always friendly. He was protective of his home, but we always said that if someone were to break into the house that Thumper would be the one left to defend it because Simon would just lick the intruder or run off in fear.
I loved him, but oh, he could make me angry at times. He was known for getting into the garbage, eating the kid's clothes, shoes and toys, knocking glass bowls of fruit off onto the floor and eating the fruit, and the glass. Yes, the glass. One time we bought over $100 worth of fireworks, left for some reason and when we came back he had eaten the fireworks. Paper, plastic, powder and all. I had the urge to light a match for days, but I laugh when I think about it now.
When my husband and I first met, Simon did not want me around. I remember a time when we placed a bunch of pillows and a blanket on the floor to watch movies. We were cuddling and Simon nonchalantly walked between us and just plopped. He turned to his side and pushed me off the blanket with all 4 legs. He really loved his daddy.
We had to give our Simon and Thumper away because the crew that we hired to add an extension to our house ruined the fence. We couldn't keep them in the house and we couldn't let them out by themselves so we gave them to an acquaintance of my husbands.
Simon spent the last years of his life doing exactly what he loved to do, riding in the passenger seat of a semi.
