Successful attorney, businessman and philanthropist. Oldest son of Charles R. and Maria Stearns Hicks. He graduated with honors from Brown University. On Dec. 17, 1879 he married Mrs. Lizzie Canfield Parker (Elizabeth Hosmer) of Meriden. They had one daughter, Elizabeth Hicks. Mrs. Hicks was born Sept. 13, 1844 and died in Paris, France June 7, 1889, and was buried at Le Pecq Cemetery, near St. Germain.
His will provided endowments for libraries, hospitals, schools and for educational awards.
The Ratcliffe Hicks School of Agriculture at the University of Connecticut was established in 1941 through his bequest.
He served as City Attorney of Meriden from 1869 to 1874 and County Attorney for New Haven from 1873 to 1876.
