He was born Jan. 3, 1919, in Frederick, the son of Jesse and Francis Junk Hawkins. He graduated from Geneseo High School in 1935. A lifetime Rice County resident, he was a farmer.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
He belonged to St. Paulís Catholic Church, Lyons, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Geneseo, and was a former Victoria Township board member.
On May 30, 1938, he married Marie Kueser in Ellsworth. She died Sept. 9, 1973. On Oct. 23, 1983, he married Ellen Laudick McClure in Lyons. She survives.
Other survivors include: two daughters, Judy Borgen, Lyons, and Sharon Madden, Bunkerhill; five stepsons, Robert, Kansas City, Kan., Tim, Olathe, Kevin and Terrence, both of Lyons, and Shawn McClure, Wichita; a stepdaughter, Kathleen Drake, Lyons; a sister, Edna Wolfe, Lyons; nine grandchildren; 16 step-grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and nine step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Herbert C. Hawkins Jr.; a brother, John Hawkins; and a sister, Thelma Warner.
Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paulís Catholic Church, Lyons. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church, Father Juan Garza presiding. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Sillin Funeral Home, Lyons. Burial will be in Geneseo Cemetery, with Full Military Honors conducted by Fort Riley Honor Guard.
Memorials may be sent to Rice County Council on Aging or Bell and Star Fund, both in care of the funeral home.
