Galena Gazette, April 19, 1927 -
LAURA MARIE HAMMER, nee Louisa Musselman was born June 10, 1858, Thompson Township, Illinois. On February 4, 1879 she was united in marriage to Rudolph Hammer. This union was blessed with five daughters and two sons. All survive with the exception on one daughter who preceded the deceased to eternity. In 1879 the deceased and husband moved to a farm in Guilford, Illinois. In 1897 her husband passed into eternity, but she remained on the farm with her children until 1907. She moved to Scales Mound where she lived until her health failed and she was unable to be alone. In August, 1926 she moved to the home of her daughter Amanda Koester where she stayed until she was called to her heavenly home. January 19, 1927 she was taken seriously ill and was bedfast. Everything human love and help could accomplish was done for her recovery, but her appointed time came Wednesday morning, April 12, at the hour of 4:30 she was quietly called to blessed death, thus making her 68 years, 7 months, and two days. The deceased was a faithful member of The Scales Mound Presbyterian Church, also a member of the Ladies Aid Society. She now leaves to morn her six children namely William Hammer of Guilford, IL; Mrs Emma McMillan of Miltonvale, KS; Mrs Amanda Koester of Guilford, IL; Louis Hammer of Guilford, IL; Mrs Carrie Koester of Thompson, IL; Mrs Allie Miller of Dubuque, IA; 23 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, four brothers William, August and Chris Musselman, KS, Ernest Musselman of Arkansas; and numerous other relatives and friends. The funeral was held Friday, April 15, from the home of Henry Koester. Short services were at the house, and from there to the Presbyterian Church of Scales Mound where the Rev. HA Schmidt officiated. The Scales Mound choir rendered some fine selections at the church. Her two sons William and Louis, two sons-in-laws, Henry and Herman Koester, and Peter and Charles Wright acted as pall bearers. Six granddaughters acted as flower girls. Interment was at Scales Mound Cemetery.

Another child of Rudolph and Louisa is Lydia who died at a young age, leaving a son Ilo Jenkins who Louisa raised. Daughter Allie has been linked, she first married Albert Miller, and second Roy Shult. Allie's known children are Bernetta and Greta.
