Josias was born in Fairfield (now Madison Twp., Franklin) County, Ohio, the son of Philip King and Mary Wright. He helped his parents on their farm, and as a young man met and married Elizabeth Dague.
Shortly after their marriage, they migrated about 1834 or 1835 to Blackcreek Twp., Mercer County, Ohio, with her parents, brothers and sisters, along with his family and several neighbors. When his father died in 1846, Josias and his brother Jesse were appointed administrators of the estate. Josias' share of the inheritance was $616.37.
Josias and Elizabeth farmed and raised a family of six children, until death claimed him at the age of 36, only four months after his father had died. It must have been devastating for Elizabeth, since their youngest, 6-month-old John died two months following Josias' death.
Christian Hartzog served as legal guardian of the estate, valued to be $1,370.54. On October 29, 1847, Elizabeth married Christian, a widower with children and a farmer of substantial holdings.

I am so sorry that death claimed you so early and that your wife and young children began their pioneer lives without you. You were loved and missed.|
