Taletta "Opal" (Pfeifer) Close died at the age of 102 years, 10 months, 15 days.

Taletta "Opal" Close, 102, a resident of Chanute, Kansas, died April 14, 2008 at Heritage Health Care in Chanute, Kansas.
She was born near Buffalo, Kansas, on the family farm, May 29, 1905, the first child of Edward and Minnie (Wright) Pfeifer.
She finished grade school at Brown School north of Fredonia, KS. She graduated from Fredonia High School in 1924 and attended State Teachers College at Emporia, KS.
She taught in rural schools in Wilson County for more than three years. When she started her teaching career she went into debt for $135 to buy a 1923 automobile on her salary of $65 a month.
On March 30, 1929, she married Martin Close at Oswego, Kansas. He died on Sept. 14, 1994. Opal had cared for Martin for several years after he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease.
Martin and Opal lived in Erie, Parsons and McPherson before settling in Chanute in 1939 and purchased their home in 1946 where Opal lived until the age of 101.
A member of Eastern Star Chapter 147, she received her 50-year pin in 2002. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church since the age of 14.
She loved all of the dedicated employees at Heritage Health Care and referred to them as her "Angels."
Opal and Martin had no children but Opal was like a second mother to her nieces, nephews and younger cousins. She was a very talented lady, making many afghans, an excellent seamstress, as well as a wonderful cook and loved collecting recipes. She was a consummate letter writer, enjoyed poetry and reading.
Survivors include Carol Adler, Shawnee Mission, KS, Roger and Patsy Pfeifer, Overland Park, KS, Richard and Lois Pfeifer, Kansas City, MO, Marilyn and Donald Shepherd, El Dorado, KS, Donna Roth, Casper, WY, Gladys and Melvin Dickinson, Albuquerque, NM, and sister-in-law and friend, Ethel Close Moore, Chanute, KS.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two younger brothers, Miles W. and Edward "Dale" Pfeifer; and her husband, Martin Close.
Funeral services will be April 18, 2008, at Penwell-Gabel Gibson Chapel, Chanute, Kansas. The Rev. Larry Myer, of the First United Methodist Church, will officiate. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery on east 14th street in Chanute, Kansas.
A memorial has been established in her name to the First United Methodist Church, Chanute, KS.
Penwell-Gabel Gibson Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
