Parents: Austin Goodwin Broton & Margaret Matilda "Jackman" Broton. Jennie was the oldest of 7 surviving children.
1910 Census shows her living with her parents in Cora, Latah Co.,Idaho. She had proudly graduated from high school and helped on the family farm.
Husband: Frederick Newell Austin - married May 29, 1911 in Moscow, Latah Co., Idaho. They met at a church function where Fred was playing the fiddle. Her family was against the marriage because of the age difference and the fact that he was divorced. But she thought she knew better and married the dashing fiddle player. They were together until his death.
There were sixteen children born and amazingly fifteen survived until adulthood. One daughter, Phyllis Jean, died in 1927 (2 1/2 yrs) from accidental poisoning.
During the Depression many of the boys went to work for the Conservation Corps. The family lived in Idaho; Spokane, WA; Pine, WA; Malden, WA; and back to Spokane.
Grandma Austin never missed a birthday. A card with a dollar bill was sent to each and every grandchild on their birthday until she was physically unable. Jennie died in the Summit View Nursing Home after suffering a heart attack.
A special thank you to my cousin Diane and other family members for adding their memories to mine and for the family photo taken in 1940s.
