Carl Otto Hunt moved to Kansas in a covered wagon in 1878 with his mother, an older half-brother (Andrew Johnson) and two half-sisters (Anna and Ida). They homesteaded south of Zurich KS. Most of his childhood was spent in and around Plainville.

Carl and Sarah were married in the home of Andrew, Carl's half-brother, on December 24, 1899. They had six children.

He ran a mercantile business in Natoma with his half-brother, later becoming Postmaster for 10 years. After that he sold insurance. According to my grandmother, he sold crop insurance. She said that he was too kind, and often didn't collect premiums from poor farmers who couldn't afford the premiums. When crops failed, he covered their losses.

In 1909, a group of local investors established the First National Bank of Natoma. It officially opened for business on May 1, 1909. Carl was one of the original stockholders.
