Sara Herrin Blackwell
February 19, 1922 - August 23, 2011

Sara Louise Herrin Blackwell, 89, of Sheffield, died on August 23, 2011. Sara was born in Abita Springs, LA, on February 19, 1922. She was the daughter of Lewis Pickett Herrin and Lucie Bridges Herrin. Sara had treasured memories of the time spent during her youth at the family ancestral home, "Bridges" established in 1834 in Walthall County, Mississippi. Her days at Bridges were special and held good memories of family. The hours spent on the "Long Gallery" at Bridges in discussions with her grandfather and others cultivated her political interest. Sara graduated from Greenwood High School, Greenwood, MS., and then attended Western Union telegraph operator school. Upon graduation, Sara reported for work at the Western Union Office in Sheffield, AL. Sara also played in a band that made many of the night spots of Sheffield and surrounding area at the time. Sara met Maurice Blackwell and they were married on September 2, 1940. They made their home on Nashville Avenue in Sheffield. Their first child, John, was born and then shortly World War II broke out. Maurice enlisted in the Army and left for training. Sara returned to Bridges with John. While at Bridges, Russell and Cindy were born. After the war, Sara returned to Sheffield where David was born. Maurice opened Blackwell Cleaners in the early 1950's and Sara learned all the jobs at the cleaners ranging from customer service to installing boiler tubes and steam lines. Sara later worked for Arrow Transportation and then went to work at the Colbert County Sheriff's office. As a Deputy Sheriff some of her special assignments involved traveling out of state to return female prisoners. In 1964, Sara ran for Circuit Court Clerk of Colbert County. There was a field of two women to include the incumbent and four men. Sara was honored by being elected for three terms. Sara was well known not only among the politicians in North Alabama but also in the state. Many of the Democratic candidates for state wide offices would solicit her support. Sara retired as Circuit Court Clerk in 1983. Sara was also President of SHB Land Development, Inc. in Walthall County, Mississippi from 2006 until her death. Sara was preceded in death by parents Lewis Pickett Herrin and Lucie Bridges Herrin and brothers William and Hugh Herrin and great granddaughter Sydney Kathleen Norris.

Sara is survived by her sons: John (Elba Lue)of Tuscumbia; Russell (Judy) of Tuscumbia, David (Mary) of Chattanooga; daughter Cindy Farris (Randy) of Haughton; LA; grandchildren, John Posey Blackwell Jr., (Katrina), Jeffrey Blackwell (June), Jennifer Hayes, Julie Clark (Tim), Allen Blackwell (Gail), Tandy Norris, Lucie Batte (Brad), Ann Boothe (John), Alan Blackwell (Cindy) and Sara McNally (Dan). Sara left her family and friends with many special memories of a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and loyal friend.
