A Celebration of Life of Richard "Dick" Eugene Carlson, 62, of Knoxville, who died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003 at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, was held Friday, Sept. 5, at Williams Funeral Home. Pastor Ray Henderson officiated at the services.

Interment was at Graceland Cemetery in Knoxville. Casketbearers were Gary Campbell, Howard Cowman, Jeff Kersbergen, Scott Kersbergen, Mark Koll, and Gary O'Neil.

Dick was born on Sept. 15, 1940, in Des Moines, one of three children born to Anna Glendora Erickson and Kermit Olius Carlson. He grew up in the local area and graduated from Avoca High School in 1958. After a few years he attended and graduated from the Iowa Lutheran Hospital Licensed Practical Nurses Program in 1962. On March 29, 1985 he married Margaret Lenna Kersbergen.

Dick worked at Lutheran and Broadlawns Hospitals in Des Moines before moving to Knoxville in 1965 to work at the VA Medical Center. He retired from the hospital in 1986 after 21 years due to his poor health. He worked for several years in security at the Marion County Raceway.

He spent many hours at his favorite sport, hunting and fishing. He was a people person with a good sense of humor who loved to visit with everyone. He was always ready to help with anything. Even during his last months at Union Park Health Services, he delivered mail, called bingo, planted flowers and helped with bibs at mealtime.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Cindy Carlson; and a sister, Janice Clarey.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret of Knoxville; two daughters and their husbands, Tamara Carlson and Djamel Boudjemline of Des Moines and Deborah and Michael Egley of Arlington, Texas; a step-daughter, Tami Francis of Des Moines; one grandson; four step-grandchildren; one sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Richard Campbell of Council Bluffs as well as many nieces and nephews.
