Birth: unknown
Death: Sep. 14, 1777

Born c.1752, Samuel Crane was among the 500 New Jersey militiamen who fought at the 1777 Battle of Springfield, during which he was fatally wounded in the town of Elizabeth. The 25-year-old American patriot thus did not live to see the triumph of the cause for which he made the ultimate sacrifice. Although the date of his death is inscribed as "September 14", local diarist Jemima Conduit wrote of his passing in an entry dated September 12.
The young soldier's gravestone with its melancholy soul effigy was made by the "Roman Haircut Carver", an unidentified craftsman active in the 1770's whose work features high-relief soul effigies with hair combed forward. The "Roman Haircut Carver" also carved the gravestone of Caleb Baldwin, another young soldier who died before the war's end and who lies buried in this churchyard.
