John P. Taylor, age 74 years, an old resident of Belvidere, died at his home in this city Tuesday morning, of apoplexy, after an illness of two days. He is survived by a wife and one son, William Taylor of California and two sisters, Mrs. Charity (paper folded over name) & Mary Lanniny of Newark. He was a son of James and Martha Pittenger Taylor and was born and lived his early life Oxford Furnace. When a young man soon after the outbreak of the Civil War, on October 4, 1861, he enlisted as a private in Company H, Ninth New Jersey Volunteers, which was the only regiment at its ???? spoken of as a rifle regiment and also the only regiment that started with twelve full companies. The company in which Mr. Taylor served was commanded by Captain Joseph J. Henry, of Oxford, N.J., after whom Post No. 97 of this town was named, who was the first officer from New Jersey to fall in battle, he being ??? at Newbern, N.C., in the sever ??? that followed the landing of what is known as the Burnside expedition, which on its voyage was struck by a hurricane and came near ??? the expedition. After serving three year, Mr. Taylor re-enlisted in the field and served until the end of the war, when he was honorably discharged from the service July 12, 1865, returning to Oxford. The funeral was held from his late home this afternoon, services being conducted by the Rev. James de Hart Bruen, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church. The services were attended by members of the Grand Army and Sons of Veterans. Undertaker Mather is in charge of the arrangements. Interment was made in the new cemetery at Hazen.
