British Prime Minister. He served in the army in World War I and then became active in the file of the Labour Party. Attlee became a member of parliament for Stepney in 1922, served as a junior minister, (1924, 29-31) and became party leader in 1935. During World War II, he was a highly successful deputy prime minister in Winston Churchill's coalition government. In 1945, he was elected the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, serving until 1951. As Prime Minister, it was the most significant reforming administration of 20th century Britain. He introduced the National Health Service, nationalized one fifth of the British economy and granted independence to India. After his term, his Labour Party effectiveness dramatically declined and he resigned as its leader in 1955. He died in his sleep of pneumonia, at the age of 84.
